Project Scope And Execution
New kiln feed system consisting of a main feed line and a bypass line, including the retrofit of an existing feed bin cone to a new fluidized, aerated bottom. Due to severe space constraints, the new bin bottom was designed and fabricated in two sections to allow installation within the congested existing structure.
Critical field activities included removal of the existing cone, maneuvering the two new sections into the building, lifting, leveling, alignment, and final welding. To simplify the installation, Turnell Corp developed a rigging approach that utilized the top of the existing bin to support and position the new sections. This method improved control during lifting and leveling while reducing the need for chain falls and extensive scaffolding.
The project also included demolition of the existing bucket elevator, new foundations and installation of a new elevator, and construction of a new kiln feed arrangement using airslides to convey material into the kiln feed chute.
