Duct design optimization with CFD

Evaluating flow distribution, pressure drop, and erosion risk in a raw-mill bypass duct.

Duct takeoff geometry
Duct takeoff geometry

The project involved a new duct for operation when the raw mill was shut down. CFD analysis was used to evaluate gas velocities and pressure drop in the initial design.

The analysis showed uneven velocity distribution at the duct takeoff. High local velocities near the duct wall, combined with entrained dust, indicated a risk of accelerated erosion. The initial design also showed a high static pressure drop at the takeoff.

The duct design was revised to reduce local velocities and static pressure drop. The gallery presents the original geometry and CFD results.
